Participation in the normal work of the organisation and the flow of information and advice which result from membership are obviously important benefits. But, in addition, IMEC has been able to negotiate with ITF a range of membership benefits which apply uniquely to companies in membership with those organisations, such as IMEC, which are members of the Joint Negotiating Group. These benefits are made available in recognition of the fact that the JNG represents good employers which have chosen to enter into negotiations rather than to have ITF agreements imposed on them.
The benefits include:
- IBF crew contracts and wage scales covering the principal labour supply countries which are significantly more cost-effective than the non-IBF versions
- A special IBF Dispute Procedure to avoid problems arising on particular ships following visits from ITF port inspectors
- An IBF version of the ITF “Special Agreement” which omits many of the more onerous administrative requirements
- The issue by ITF of a “Green Card” to ships covered by IBF Agreements which identifies the ship as entitled to the privileges available through the IBF system
- A reduction in the number of visits made to members ships by ITF inspectors
- A 5% refund of contributions members make to the ITF Welfare Fund and the establishment of an IBF Welfare Fund to hold and disburse these funds
- A dedicated e-mail address for IMEC members to contact the ITF Agreements Unit
- Advice and assistance from the IMEC secretariat with labour affairs problems and preparation for members own wage negotiations.
