IMEC Participates in Crewing Cyprus 2019

IMEC is pleased to announce that on the 20th March, it participated in the WISTA Crewing Cyprus 2019 Conference.
IMEC’s Head of Training and Operations Mr. Adam Lewis, sat on a panel discussion entitled ‘Connectivity – Road to Disaster or Moving with the Times? – The Pros and Cons of Internet on Board Ships’. In the discussion, Mr. Lewis said:
“At the IMO’s MSC 100 last December, automation was discussed proactively. This will create the business model to provide fast and reliable internet onboard ships. Whereas this will be a big advantage for attracting and retaining ‘Generation Connected’ into the industry, it won’t be without problems. Seafarers often operate in extremely remote parts of the world and viewing family events or problems on social media, may well lead to an enhanced feeling of isolation or helplessness.”
The panel concluded that internet connection onboard was now a case of ‘when’ not ‘if’. A number of issues were identified such as using mobile phones during hazardous operations or watches and so it was recognised that companies would need to adopt new procedures in this regard.
IMEC was pleased to be a platinum sponsor of the event.
