The principal policy-making body of IMEC is the General Assembly. This usually meets once each year at the IMEC office in London. All Members are entitled to attend meetings of the General Assembly.

The day-to-day business affairs of IMEC are run by the Executive Board, which comprises the Chairs of the five regional Contact Groups plus up to three additional members. The Chairman and Vice-Chairs of the Board are appointed by the General Assembly. The Executive Board meets at least twice each year, usually in conjunction with other meetings, such as IBF or JNG.

IMEC Contact Groups

IMEC has established five Contact Groups, one in each of the main regions where Members are based. Currently these Groups are:

Northern Europe
Southern Europe
Eastern and Central Europe
Mediterranean
South East Asia
East Asia

The Contact Groups may meet as necessary to consider particular issues, such as policy with regard to wage negotiations, or deal with these issues by correspondence. Where appropriate, the Groups may also take the lead in local negotiations – for example, the Mediterranean Group leads on negotiations with Ver. di concerning ships beneficially-owned in Germany.

The Chairperson of each group is elected by the members and, in addition to acting as the regional IMEC contact point, they become members of the Executive Board of IMEC so as to ensure regional representation.

The names and contact details of the Chairpersons are:
